Story: “How a Heart Attack can kill and save at the same time”
By- Dr. Denis Shrestha MD
A 43 years old healthy gentleman, banker by profession, leading a successful career and happy family life, had been sensing a bit of discomfort over his upper side of abdomen on and off for a past 1 month, which he self diagnosed himself has having a gastritis problem and taking antacids.
One morning, soon after getting up he started experiencing the similar upper abdomen pain, but this time it was little more severe, feeling of heaviness in chest, and felt like puking (nausea), and he was sweating mildly although it was not hot. He blamed the last nights fatty dinner reception and took antacid. Rested 15 minutes and was feeling little better. At 8:30am, he went to work and as it was Friday, and he was still not feeling completely well, he decided to return home early after light lunch. At home, while climbing stairs to his bedroom, his upper abdomen and chest heaviness, started to increase, and it was now more like real pain, and he started getting light headedness, sweating heavily, and he collapsed on top of the stairs and DIED.
Sad! It was a heart attack that killed him at the age of 43, leaving his wife and a 10 years old son and 8 years old daughter alone.
Socked and feared by the news, a week later few of his colleagues from the bank visited Advanced Polyclinic for Executive Health Checkup. One of his close friend and also a colleague had a Positive Treadmill Test (a test where ECG is done while giving stress to the heart by walking on a treadmill, a very informative test to predict artery blockage and heart attack in the near future). He also had high Cholesterol. Next day he underwent Coronary Angiography (a test to see the blockage of the blood vessels of the heart). He had 2 blockages of 90% and 80% in two different arteries. His arteries were immediately opened up by a procedure called Angioplasty. His chance of Heart Attack and Death was prevented. He was saved.
If his friend hadn’t died of Heart Attack, then he would have certainly had a heart attack very soon and might have died. His friend’s heart attack saved his life.
70% blockages of heart vessels are silent. You wont have any symptoms. The only and first symptoms maybe Heart attack and death. So don’t wait for heart attack to visit a doctor, you might never make it.
